Departmental Profile

The Department of Private Law maintained its strong research record during the period of review. Members of the department maintained a high rate of publication in 2010, which included a number of international publications. Moreover, during the course of 2010, two Oxford University Press texts to which members of the department had made substantial contributions appeared: a text on the South African law of property edited by Professor HanriMostert and A/Professor Anne Pope, and an Afrikaans edition of a text on the South African law of succession to which Mr Mohamed Paleker had contributed.

The Department’s research capacity was significantly strengthened during the past year by the arrival of Dr Lesley Greenbaum, formerly an associate professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who specialises in legal education, and Dr SindisoMnisi, a former Rhodes Scholar whose DPhil from Oxford University was on African customary law.

Research-related achievements by departmental members during 2010 include Professor ChumaHimonga’s obtaining a National Research Foundation Research Chair (in African Customary Law), Professor HanriMostert’s being chosen as a Visiting Professor to the Centre of Law and Governance at Groningen University, and Associate Professor Helen Scott’s being invited to be a visiting lecturer at Oxford University and a Visiting Professor at Paris II (Universite Pantheon-Assas).
