Research continues to be high on the agenda of the IS departments deliverables, with articles in accredited peer-reviewed journals up from 11 in 2009 to 13 in 2010. Our initial research objective was to increase research output in the department (quantity), and this goal has largely been achieved. The current focus is on improving quality, which is yielding results.
The department is proud of its new NRF rated researcher, Associate Professor Kosheek Sewchurran. It brings to 5 the number of NRF-rated researchers in the Department.
Prof. Ojelanki Ngwenyama (Ryerson University, Canada) visited the Department in March 2010 and presented an intensive 10 day workshop on research to PhD students and staff members.
Professor Irwin Brown was part of the international team hailed by the Association for Information Systems (AIS) for its contribution to build research capacity at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia. In a newsletter, the AIS feted the team Brown and a group of mostly US-based information-systems (IS) scholars that had a hand in drawing up and teaching on the AAUs new doctoral programme in information systems.
The department was host for two international IS conferences in 2010 The International Conference on Information Management and Evaluation (ICIME) in March and the International Development Informantics Association conference in October. In the process, leading international IS researchers such as Professors Ngwenyama, Walsham and Mbarika were hosted by the department.
A record 10 Masters students and 3 PhD students graduated from the department in 2010.
